Strangerous explores the borderland between noise, ambient, contemporary and everything else that defies normal genre conventions. She works with electronic processing of sounds from field recordings, vocals, synth and sometimes other instruments.
With her third album, CHANT, she presents chants of today, incorporating both the disturbing and the beautiful aspects of today’s society. Chants have throughout the ages been important to people in ritual contexts and have acted as a unifying force. What do we have in common in today's individualistic society? The world is characterized by unrest and climate crisis accompanied by a jungle of sound that has never been experienced before. For those of us who have grown up in this jungle of sound, it is the norm, something you often don't even notice. On some level, one could perhaps say that there is a sense of security in these repetitive industrial sounds we surround ourselves with - they become like chants, as they become a natural part of our everyday rituals, for better or for worse. Strangerous uses these buzzing sounds as a starting point, combined with more traditionally beautiful sounds to rediscover the noise in a different context.
CHANT is also released physically on a double CD, with a cover hand printed by the artist herself, using linocut.
Attn:Magazine about Strangerous: “twisting the listener into a paradox of becoming both acquainted and alienated, pulling them into a buzzing, insidious greyscale trauma as the music churns like a horrid machine.”
Strangerous is the solo project of Nora Elise Stemland.
